Questions about Rust Hosting
We've put our frequently asked questions right here, so you have your answers before you even start.
Still have questions or just want to chat?
How do I host a Rust app 24/7?
Deploy a Container, pick Rust, upload your crate or a compiled binary, add your Environment Variables and start your server: easy as that! Your app keeps running, even if your computer is offline.
Is this a VPS?
No, FPS.ms does not offer VPS hosting. Your Rust application runs in a container managed by FPS.ms. This means you never have to update its operating system, install security patches or keep the machine running yourself.
Which Rust version do I get?
The latest stable Rust, with Cargo. Your server builds your crate in release mode, so it runs at full speed.
How does my project get built?
Your server runs cargo install on your crate when it starts, and uses your Cargo.lock when you have one. The build folder stays on your server, so later builds only compile what changed. Prefer to build yourself? Upload a compiled Linux binary instead.
How much memory do I need?
Compiling Rust takes more memory than running it. A small bot builds on any plan, and an API with many crates, like Axum or Actix Web, builds best with 1 to 2 GB. Uploading a compiled binary skips the build.
Can I host an Axum or Actix Web API?
Yes! Your API gets its own Public URL with HTTPS, websockets included. Paid plans can pick the name or connect a domain.
Can I host a Discord bot in Rust?
Yes! A Serenity or Poise bot runs like any other Rust program, stays online 24/7 and starts again if it crashes.
Can I deploy my app from GitHub?
Yes, you can deploy your code directly from GitHub, and even automatically (re)deploy your container when you push to your branch. If something breaks in your code, you can always roll back. GitHub deploys are a Pro feature.
Do paid plans include a database?
Yes, every paid plan from 256 MB includes a MariaDB database.
How does the free plan work?
A free plan has to be renewed every day to stay online, and at least once every 28 days to keep its data. More details on the Free Rust Hosting page.
