Questions about Kotlin Hosting

We've put our frequently asked questions right here, so you have your answers before you even start.

Still have questions or just want to chat?

How do I host a Kotlin app 24/7?

Deploy a Container, pick Kotlin, upload your project or a runnable JAR, add your Environment Variables and start your server: easy as that! Your app keeps running, even if your computer is offline.

Is this a VPS?

No, FPS.ms does not offer VPS hosting. Your Kotlin application runs in a container managed by FPS.ms. This means you never have to update its operating system, install security patches or keep the machine running yourself.

Which Java version runs my app?

JDK 21 or JDK 25, and you can switch between them whenever you like. Gradle projects use the Kotlin version from your build file.

How does my project get built?

Your server builds Gradle projects when it starts, with your Gradle wrapper if you have one. Gradle needs to make a fat JAR, like Ktor's buildFatJar or the Shadow plugin. Plain .kt files are compiled with kotlinc, and you can also upload a JAR you built yourself.

How much memory do I need?

Gradle needs about 1 GB of memory to build, so pick at least 1 GB when your server builds your project. A small app from a JAR you built yourself runs on less.

Can I host a Ktor or Spring Boot API?

Yes! Your API gets its own Public URL with HTTPS, and paid plans can pick the name or connect a domain. Spring Boot needs more memory than Ktor, so give it room to grow.

Can I deploy my app from GitHub?

Yes, you can deploy your code directly from GitHub, and even automatically (re)deploy your container when you push to your branch. If something breaks in your code, you can always roll back. GitHub deploys are a Pro feature.

Do plans include a database?

Yes, every plan includes a MariaDB database.

Ready to deploy your Kotlin application?

Every plan comes with GitHub deploys, a database and your own domain.
